CORE Phonological Segmentation Test

This Grades K–1 phonological segmentation assessment contains three parts: Part A: Sentences into Words; Part B: Words into Syllables; and Part C: Words into Phonemes.

CORE Phoneme Deletion Test

This assessment for Grades K-3 includes four phoneme deletion tasks arranged in order of difficulty. The first task assesses the student’s ability to delete initial phonemes. The remaining tasks assess the student’s ability to delete final phonemes, such as /t/ in the word seat; initial phonemes in blends, such as /s/ in the word slip; and phonemes embedded in blends, such as /l/ in the word play.

CORE Phoneme Segmentation Test

This measure for Grades 2–12 assesses the student’s ability to break a word into its component phonemes, or sounds. For example, the word sat has three phonemes: /s/ /a/ /t/. The word shoe, although it has four letters, has only two phonemes: /sh/ /oo/.

CORE Spanish Phonemic Awareness Test

This test consists of two measures of phonemic awareness:

  1. Phoneme Oddity
In these subtests the examiner says three or four words and then asks the student which word has a different beginning, ending, or middle sound than the other words.
  2. Phoneme Deletion
The examiner says a word (e.g., mala) and asks the student to repeat the word without the initial or final sound (e.g., ala). Initial and final deletion of single consonants and initial deletion of consonant blends are assessed.

CORE Phonics Surveys

The CORE Phonics Survey and the CORE Spanish Phonics Survey assess the phonics and phonics-related skills that have a high rate of application in beginning reading. Each survey presents a number of lists of letters and words for the student to identify or decode. Pseudowords, or made-up words, are included since the student must use decoding skills to correctly pronounce these words and cannot have memorized them.

CORE Graded High Frequency Word Survey

The CORE Graded High-Frequency Word Survey consists of five word lists that assess student recognition of words occurring very frequently in text at each of Grades K through 4. The lists take into account the changing frequency of particular words from grade to grade and reflect the high-frequency words encountered by students as they progress through the grades. Words that occur with high frequency at all grade levels (i.e. the, and, is, you, was, etc.) were included for consideration only in the grade where they first occur with very high frequency.

San Diego Quick Assessment of Reading Ability

This test measures the recognition of words out of context. Generally, proficient readers read as accurately both in and out of context. The test consists of 13 graded word lists from preprimer to eleventh grade. The words within each list are of about equal difficulty.

CORE Spanish Spelling Inventory

The CORE Spanish Spelling Inventory consists of a single list of 20 Spanish words. The word list is administered in the same way as a standard spelling test. The words in the list represent a wide range of important phonetic concepts, sequenced to represent simple to more complex word structure and orthographic features. Following administration of the inventory, the student’s application of specific spelling skills is summarized.

MASI-R Oral Reading Fluency Measures

The MASI-R Oral Reading Fluency Measures represent a portion of the Multi-Level Academic Skills Inventory, Revised (MASI-R) by Howell, et al. The measures consist of Student and Teacher record versions of three oral reading fluency (ORF) curriculum-based measures (CBM) at each of Grades 1–6. These CBM measures are designed to sample a student’s oral reading fluency and may be used up to three times a year. The results of the screening can help determine if there is reason to further explore student educational needs or to adjust curriculum or instruction.

CORE Vocabulary Screening Test

The CORE Vocabulary Screening measures how well students know the meaning of grade-level words they read silently. The task involves reading a word in a box and choosing which of three answer choices means about the same as the word in the box. It is a pure measure of reading vocabulary in that there is no need to comprehend text in order to complete the task and there is no context to provide clues to the meaning of the word.

Critchlow Spanish Verbal Language Scale

The Critchlow Spanish Verbal Language Scale measures one aspect of a student’s vocabulary in Spanish. Vocabulary is assessed by asking a student to say the “opposite” of a series of words spoken by the examiner. The words on this assessment are arranged in increasing order of difficulty. The scale contains 75 Spanish stimulus words.

CORE Reading Maze Comprehension Test

A maze reading assessment is a task that measures how well students understand text they read silently. The maze task differs from traditional comprehension in that it is based completely on the text. After the first sentence, every seventh word in the passage is replaced with the correct word and two distracters. Students choose the word from among the three choices that fits best with the rest of the passage.
